Vancouver, BC – September 18, 2024 – Clean Energy Association of British Columbia (CEBC) is thrilled to acknowledge the outstanding response to BC Hydro’s recent Call for Power, which closed on September 16, 2024. The geographic distribution of bids demonstrates participation from across B.C., with eight proposals from the Southern Interior, four from the Central Interior, five from the North Coast, two from the Peace Region, and two from Vancouver Island. The 21 proposals submitted to BC Hydro represent over 9,000 GWh/year of renewable energy – roughly three times the original target. This strong response is a significant milestone toward electrifying the province and advancing economic reconciliation for First Nations.

“This is exciting news for British Columbia as we look ahead to the future of electrification and clean growth. The diversity of renewable energy projects—70% wind, 20% solar, and 10% biomass and hydro—shows B.C.’s commitment to transitioning to low-carbon energy solutions while ensuring that both regional and Indigenous communities benefit from the opportunities created,” said Kwatuuma Cole Sayers, Executive Director of CEBC. “This level of engagement from First Nations and independent power producers across multiple regions signals a bright future for our province. We are building partnerships that align clean energy development with the principles of economic reconciliation. These projects will create local jobs, attract private investment, and support the sustainable growth of First Nations-led clean energy initiatives.”

The development of new clean energy projects in response to this Call for Power is expected to generate between $2.3 billion and $3.6 billion in private capital investment, while creating an estimated 800 to 1,500 jobs annually. These projects will also bring valuable revenue and energy affordability benefits to communities across B.C.

CEBC is excited about the continued development of renewable energy projects that will contribute to electrifying British Columbia while fostering stronger partnerships between First Nations, industry, and government. The Association remains dedicated to advocating for clean energy policies that prioritize sustainability and reconciliation, alongside accelerating renewable energy development across B.C.
