On September 28th, 2021, Premier John Horgan announced BC Hydro’s low carbon Electrification Plan. The Clean Energy Association of BC (CEBC) welcomes the new plan as a step in the right direction, as it has been calling for the Government of BC to mandate BC Hydro to integrate CleanBC electrification targets into its long-range plan. CEBC’s submission on the 2021 Draft Integrated Resource Plan and 2018 Electrification White Paper are two clear examples. CEBC is pleased to see more explicit GHG reduction targets and means of electrification in the new plan, particularly within BC’s transportation and industrial sectors.

The implementation of the Electrification Plan would reduce BC’s GHG emissions by almost one million tonnes of CO2 (equivalent) annually. Although this is good news, further action is required to meet the legislated target of 25.4 million tonnes below the 2007 baseline by 2030.
