Vancouver, BC – March 13, 2025 – It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the tragic passing of Leona Humchitt, a distinguished member of the Heiltsuk First Nation and a dedicated advocate for clean energy initiatives. Leona’s unwavering commitment to her community and the environment shaped a future rooted in sustainability and self-determination.

As a proud member of the Heiltsuk First Nation from Bella Bella, B.C., Leona’s leadership advanced clean energy solutions, strengthened community resilience, and championed a better future for generations to come. She and her Nation have been active members of the Clean Energy Association of BC (CEBC), working to create lasting benefits through Indigenous-led clean energy development. Her dedication to the well-being of her Nation and the lands and waters they steward was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of working alongside her.

Beyond her professional achievements, Leona was a cherished wife to her husband, Tom, and a loving mother to their five children: Flora, Kristy, Mercedes, Cheryl, and Thomas Benjamin. She embraced grandparenthood with joy, finding deep meaning in the role of supporting and guiding the next generation.

Leona’s legacy is one of passion, dedication, and love for her community and family. She will be deeply missed, and her contributions will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched. Our hearts are heavy as we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, Nation, and all who knew her.

Thank you, Leona, for all that you have done.
