The Clean Energy Association of British Columbia (CEBC) welcomes today’s introduction of the Renewable Energy Projects (Streamlined Permitting) Act, which will enable the BC Energy Regulator (BCER) to establish a rigorous regulatory framework for renewable energy through consultation with First Nations and industry, and advance important steps to remove regulatory duplication for critical clean energy projects.
“This legislation is an important step toward a balanced regulatory framework that encourages responsible clean-energy development at a critical time for our communities, our economy, and our climate,” said Executive Director Kwatuuma Cole Sayers in the government release. “CEBC is proud to work with the Province and the BC Energy Regulator to help build a framework that is efficient, transparent, and aligned with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Together, we can build a cleaner, stronger, and more resilient future.
CEBC, on behalf of its over 200 members, including First Nations and industry, has been working closely with the BCER and the Province to advance the modernization of BC’s regulatory framework for renewable energy. The Association is pleased to see continued progress on responsibly streamlining and modernizing the regulation of clean energy projects – a priority outlined in our recent Vision Document. BC is taking bold steps, enabled by the Renewable Energy Projects (Streamlined Permitting) Act, to ensure critical clean energy infrastructure can be built efficiently and with First Nations leadership, to the benefit of all British Columbians for generations to come.
As the leading voice of BC’s clean energy sector for over 30 years, CEBC’s work as a convenor and advocate is guided by a deep commitment to driving tangible progress on reconciliation, electrification, and economic development across the province. This commitment continues to be at the centre of our ongoing collaboration on this new regulatory framework.
Now more than ever, in the face of unprecedented global uncertainty, it is critical to come together to accelerate responsible clean energy projects that reduce emissions, create BC-based jobs, catalyze sustainable growth, and strengthen our grid and economy. CEBC will continue to work closely with our members, the BCER, and the Province to deliver a modern regulatory framework that encourages clean investment while upholding Indigenous rights and title, and our world-class environmental standards. This new framework will ensure cost-effective, clean projects come online where and when they are needed by our communities and industries.
These timely changes will be a key topic at Generate 2025, CEBC’s annual conference taking place May 12–14 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver. Featuring panels on permitting modernization, Indigenous equity, and clean energy procurement, Generate 2025 brings together First Nations, industry, and government to help shape the future of clean energy in BC. We encourage all partners and stakeholders to attend and be part of these vital conversations.
